Established in 1971, Things Japanese is a gallery specializing in the sale of Japanese woodblock prints and various Japanese art & antiques. A family business, Things Japanese has evolved from a small antique shop in Queens, New York to a Manhattan gallery and now an extensive website as well.
The wide selection of our collection and range of prices can accommodate most collectors, interior designers, dealers and gift givers. We've always tried to have reasonable prices and high quality pieces.
The collection specializes in a wide range of woodblock prints including the following schools:
Ukiyo-e ("Pictures of the floating world" from the 18th & 19th century) prints featured in the collection include designs by artists such as Harunobu, Koryusai, Utamaro, Hokusai, Toyokuni, Eisen, Eizan, Kunisada, Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi, Kunichika, Yoshitoshi and more.
Osaka (School of print design from Osaka from 18th & 19th century) prints including artists Hirosada, Ashiyuki, Sadanobu, Hokuei, Hokushu, Yoshitaki, etc.
Shunga (erotic designs) including artists Harunobu, Koryusai, Utamaro, Eisen, Eizan, Kunisada, Hiroshige, Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, etc.
Shin Hanga ("New Print" movement of the early to mid-20th century) prints include works by Hasui, H. Yoshida, Helen Hyde, Natori Shunsen, Koson (Shoson), Shiro, Shinsui, Jacoulet, Kotondo. T. Yoshida and more.
Sosaku Hanga ("Creative Print" movement of the 20th century) prints include the artists Kiyoshi Saito, Sekino, Watanabe, etc
Antiques include imari porcelain, scroll & screen paintings, baskets, netsuke, noh masks, lacquer, mingei objects, books and more. Over the years the gallery has had a wide assortment of interesting pieces that represent almost every aspect of Japanese culture and hisory.
